At the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) congress in Montreal, Canada, Iris van Moort received one of the Fundamental Research Career Development Awards. This award aims to strengthen fundamental hemostasis research by supporting innovative ideas of high-potential early career investigators (link).
Iris will perform translational studies in patients with bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC). Around 50% of the patients that visit the out-patient hematology clinic with clinical significant bleeding symptoms cannot be diagnosed and receive the diagnosis of BDUC. In Iris’ research project, patient-specific endothelial cells will be isolated and used in vessel-on-a-chip models. Using this method, the inner lining of a blood vessel can be recapitulated to investigate the role of patient-specific endothelial cells on the bleeding phenotype.
