Els Mansell from the Department of Hematology at Erasmus MC has been awarded an €850,000 Vidi grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The five-year grant will support innovative research into the role of mitochondria in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), with the long-term aim of developing new therapeutic strategies for this aggressive blood cancer.

Research

Acute myeloid leukaemia is an aggressive form of blood cancer for which treatment options remain limited, particularly for patients who do not respond adequately to existing therapies. There is a clear need for new treatment approaches that target the biological mechanisms that allow leukaemia cells to develop and survive.

Els Mansell’s research focuses on mitochondria, the structures within cells that play a central role in energy production and cellular metabolism. Her team will investigate how mitochondria contribute to the development and persistence of AML, and how leukaemia cells depend on their mitochondrial energy supply.

By uncovering these underlying mechanisms, the research aims to identify vulnerabilities that could be exploited therapeutically. The ultimate goal is to lay the foundation for an new generation of medicines that selectively disrupt the energy supply of leukaemia cells.

The NWO Vidi grant provides €850,000 in funding over five years, enabling emerging leaders to develop an innovative line of research. This award will allow Els Mansell and her team to advance our understanding of AML biology and explore new avenues towards more effective treatments. Congratulations to Els and her team on this achievement!
