On the 21st of November, the 22nd Dutch Chromatin Meeting took place in the KINO cinema in Rotterdam. The meeting attracted over 150 attendees from different Dutch universities, UMCs, and other research institutes.
History and tradition of the meeting
Dutch Chromatin Meeting was initiated in early 2000. This annual meeting is organized by one of local chromatin communities, including (1) Erasmus MC, (2) Netherlands Cancer Institute, (3) Utrecht University, UMCs and Hubrecht Institute, (4) Radboud University, (5) Amsterdam universities and UMCs and (6) Leiden University and UMC. Erasmus MC was the host of this meeting in 2025. The meeting is a unique platform that brings chromatin biologists across the country together for knowledge exchange and networking. These scientists work on different topics of chromatin biology using eukaryotic and prokaryotic models, including but not restricted to gene regulation, DNA replication and repair, biophysics and computational biology. The meeting specifically encourages young chromatin biologists such as PhD students and postdocs to share their latest research with the community in the format of oral or poster presentation.
Program
The program included four 30-min talks from (inter)national keynote speakers and eight short talks selected from the abstracts. Four keynote speakers, Prof. Remus Dame (Leiden University, Netherlands), Prof. Argyris Papantonis (Göttingen UMC, Germany), Willy Baarends (Erasmus MC, Netherlands) and Jessica Downs (Institute of Cancer Research, UK), summarized their research programs, covering the topics of prokaryotic chromatin organization, transcriptional addiction in cancer, meiotic chromosome regulation and chromatin regulation by the SWI/SNF complex. The eight short talks and the poster session showed the high level of chromatin research in the Netherlands. At the end of the meeting, three best posters were selected for the poster prizes.
Organizing committee (2025)
The department of Hematology was involved in organizing this event, showing the visibility of our department in Dutch chromatin community. The organizing committee consisted of Kerstin Wendt (Developmental Biology), Nitika Taneja (Molecular Genetics), Ralph Stadhouders (Pulmonology) and Ningqing Liu (Hematology).
Sponsors
The meeting is financially supported by de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), Nederlandse Vereniging voor Biochemie en Moleculaire Biologie (NVBMB) and three industry sponsors (Arima Genomics, 10X Genomics and Active Motif). The poster prize is kindly provided by Stichting 100 jaar Biochemie in Nederland.
