Ferdows Atiq has been awarded multiple prestigious international research grants to advance the understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of von Willebrand disease (VWD).

Ferdows Atiq, a scientist and internist-hematologist in training, is the recipient of the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders (EAHAD) Research Grant 2025, a CSL Behring investigator-initiated grant, and the Novo Nordisk Access to Insight Clinical Research Grant 2025.

Research

These highly competitive awards will support an ambitious research program aimed at addressing key knowledge gaps in VWD. His work will focus on several clinically relevant and innovative areas, including the impact of age-related increases in von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels on bleeding phenotype in patients with type 1 VWD. This research seeks to understand whether bleeding symptoms may change with aging in patients with type 1 VWD, and how this should influence management.

In addition, he will work on the development of a novel, data-driven algorithm for VWD subclassification, with the goal of improving diagnostic precision and enabling more personalized patient care. Ferdows will lead this international study, including over 2500 patients with VWD from nationwide cohorts from the Netherlands, Ireland, United States, Canada, and France.

Another important component of his research is the exploration of the pathophysiological overlap between Bleeding Disorders of Unknown Cause (BDUC) and VWD. By investigating shared mechanisms, this work aims to refine disease classification and enable personalized treatment. This large international study, led by Ferdows, will involve cohorts from the Netherlands, Ireland and Austria.

Overall, Ferdows’ research aims to contribute to a deeper mechanistic understanding of VWD and ultimately improve outcomes for VWD patients worldwide.
